The mention of 'navigating mixed signals' really struck a chord. It can be so disheartening when you're looking for connection and constantly encountering ambiguity. For me, real friendship is built on clarity, trust, and shared values, not just shared interests. It's about showing up for each other, even when it's inconvenient. I'm hopeful this conversation can help us all identify and cultivate those more meaningful connections

idk i’ve been thinking… like is the lack of gay platonic friendships more about how we’re socially conditioned or is it just human nature? i feel like there’s a lot to it, and it keeps changing as the world gets more complex socially.

the way things shift so fast now… it’s wild. like how did we end up here as a community? 😅 so many layers. so many moments that shaped all this.

yeah fr. especially with black gay men, it can feel super cliquey. like trying to join a friend group and actually feel like you belong is hard. sometimes it feels like gay men only become friends with ppl they’re attracted to. and honestly, i know a few who only became “friends” after they hooked up. some still sleep with their “friends” too. it’s like… the community feels so driven by sex. 😕

first off this not even a question people bring up enough, especially in the gay community. folks love to assume that just cause you friends with somebody and one of y’all a top and the other a bottom, y’all gotta be messing around automatically. and that’s just not true.

my best friend is a verse, leans more top, and i’m a top too. but we never looked at each other like that. never had no sexual convo, never flirted, never gave that type of energy. it never even crossed our minds.

we just got real respect for each other. that’s my dog for real. people gotta stop thinking everything gotta be sexual. two people can vibe, support each other, and be solid without it ever going there.

just cause we could don’t mean we would or even want to. some friendships really just built on love and loyalty, not sex.

Yeah, I totally agree. Just because something is an option doesn’t mean you have to go for it. I think a lot of gay men struggle with self-control in this area, which might be why it feels so difficult. Not many of us think like this—you are definitley one of a kind.
